The rise of everyday resistance

In the rhetoric and imaginations of the the right, those protesting the new administration are “radicals”. Trash can arsonists. Spray paint thugs. Ugly, mannish women and their criminal counterparts who are all insane with rage. Add the implied “scary brown people and ‘others'” to that list of false critique and the right’s got itself a villain.

Rep. John J. Duncan Jr. (R-Tenn.) is using this exaggerated narrative to avoid facing his constituents at town hall meetings. He said, “I am not going to hold town hall meetings in this atmosphere, because they would very quickly turn into shouting opportunities for extremists, kooks and radicals. Also, I do not intend to give more publicity to those on the far left who have so much hatred, anger and frustration in them. I have never seen so many more sore losers as there are today.”

It’s an easy dismissal of the majority of this country who feels anger about the policies and statements coming out of the new administration. (Not to get into those specifics too much, but why are we cutting PBS funding when Trump’s lavish lifestyle is costing 20 times the federal budget of that program?) Of course representatives like Duncan don’t want to face the music they are creating because it’s hard. The much easier way out is to mischaracterize the overwhelming crowds of people, whose lives he’s changing for the worse, as thugs.

Enter: Polite suburban moms

One criticism of the Women’s March in January was that it was so very pink – and so very white. “Of course there weren’t arrests! There wasn’t the same police presence because white women aren’t seen as a threat,” the logic  goes. It is not wrong.

So what if the “safe” suburban, white woman and her jolly, patriotic children join the visible resistance in the streets? Now? Again? Persistently? The NormCore of The Resistance, if you will! Get out there, white ladies. It’s time to get your manicure stained up with Sharpie ink.

Ironically, to fight the party of racism and xenophobia, the left needs aryan optics. Is it right? No. Will it work? Sadly, yes. Fox News has become the medium of choice for the low-slung right partly because of all the blonde hair on screen. It’s impossibly stupid and yet it’s true. Hey, if white women can use their voice to fight oppression and destructive policies, let’s go. Bring your peroxide.

[Update: I mean look, here is the President of the United States of America’s aide throwing up the white power symbol. This WHITE POWER symbol. It is the responsibility of the white resistance to denounce this immediately.]

I think you mean Orange Power, bro. Are you guys sharing self-tanner? Put some on your hands if you want to fool people.

Sure it annoys me that when moms do things it’s a mom thing and not just a thing-thing like when dads do things every day. But that’s not my fight today. Today, I will sink as deep into the inoffensive mom zone I can. I’m going to wield that unsuspecting “Let Me Speak To Your Manager” power against policies affecting my family. Like, quit fucking with our schools. Please. I packed you a snack and I’m so reasonable!

Not My Presidents Day Pasadena

Families marched from Memorial Park to City Hall in Pasadena, Ca in observance of Not My President’s Day Feb 20.

My friends and I here in Pasadena, CA have other motives for suburban rallies, of course. With small children, newborns and medical and logistical needs to consider, large rallies are not always feasible. We will be holding several over the next few months including Tax Day in an effort to make the resistance accessible to everyone.

Memorial Park, the location of our Pasadena rallies, happens to be located adjacent to a senior housing development. Several seniors discovered us and raised thumbs in our direction. Next time, we will give them advanced notice of our protest (Memorial Park, 10AM, April 15) so those inclined may plan to join just by walking out their front door.

What will representatives like Duncan do when this catches on and the optics of protests across America are grandmas, strollers and moms who are smart enough to express their anger with a smile and policy points when talking to the news? Turn back into Ursula and jump into the sea?

We’ve already begun. Join us, all are welcome!
